Since its inception in 2005, Reddit has become the ‘5th most-used social platform worldwide’.

Reddit is a forum website that’s composed of thousands of subreddits, which are smaller forums that are centred around a specific theme or topic.

With over ‘430 million monthly active users’, Reddit represents a lot of untapped potential for advertisers, emphasising why an increasing number of businesses are starting to use it.

If you’re a business owner interested in creating Reddit ads but aren’t sure where to get started, our step-by-step guide has got you covered.

To advertise on Reddit:

  1. Create a company profile
  2. Set up your advertising account on Reddit
  3. Discover your audience on subreddits
  4. Create an advertising campaign
  5. Analyse and measure your ad performance

1. Create A Company Profile

To get started, you’ll first need to create a company profile on Reddit.

If you have a personal account on Reddit, you’ll likely already know how this process works.

Setting up a company profile is essential not only to establish professionalism but also because when other Reddit users click on your account, you’ll want to ensure the content they’re viewing aligns with your business.

It’s also important that when you’re replying to comments on your Reddit ad, the reply comes from a business account for consistency.

2. Set Up Your Advertising Account On Reddit

Next, it’s time to set up your advertising account on Reddit.

To sign up, simply visit the Reddit Ads website to get started, and then fill in the necessary fields including:

  • Your business email address
  • Your business username
  • Unique business password (Make sure there’s a mix of lowercase and uppercase letters and that it contains a minimum of 8 characters)

Once you’ve entered the information and clicked “Sign Up”, you’ll be taken to an advertising dashboard.

Before you can advertise on Reddit, you will need to add your billing information to your profile.

If you have multiple employees that are going to be involved in your Reddit ad campaigns, you’ll need to add them as users by clicking on “Manage Permissions” underneath your username.

From here, you can add their work email addresses and choose their permission level from the options of “Analyst”, “Creator” and “Administrator”.

3. Discover Your Audience On Subreddits & Confirm Page Views

Instead of wasting your advertising efforts on the home page as it’s too broad, you’ll instead want to focus your efforts on discovering your audience on subreddits.

The subreddits you choose will entirely depend on your business. To do this, curate a list of potential subreddits that might be suitable for your audience and look at the content within it. Ask yourself: Is it similar to the type of content your customers would find engaging

Considering that ‘Reddit boasts nearly 140,000 active subreddits at any given time’, this can be time-consuming if you don’t use a tool like RedditList to help you sift through and find the most suitable subreddits for your business.

Once you’ve curated your list of potential subreddits, you’ll need to confirm whether they’ve got enough page views.

It’s important to note that Reddit has a minimum spend of $5 per ad campaign, it costs $0.75 per 1000 page views and you can buy up to three months.

Bearing this in mind, you’ll need to select subreddits that receive around 6,700 page views over three months to meet the $5 minimum spend.

When you divide 6,700 by 90 (three months), you’ll need about 74 page views per day for a subreddit to be suitable and for you to reach the minimum spend.

4. Create An Advertising Campaign

To create an advertising campaign, you’ll need to click on “Dashboard” followed by “Create Campaign”.

Now you’ll need to come up with a name for your campaign, as well as select a funding instrument, and campaign objective.

From here, you can narrow down your audience, including communities and interests, as well as your budget and your bid (the maximum amount you’d pay per 1000 impressions).

You can also come up with a schedule that includes when your ad will appear and when the campaign will end.

Click “Continue”, and now you can add third-party trackers to determine the number of unique web page visits and social media viewers that have come directly from your Reddit ad.

Create a new post or upload to an existing advertisement you might have already created. To learn more about the best practices for creating Reddit ads, there’s a huge amount of information on the Reddit for Business site.

Once you’ve clicked “Review” and ensured all the information is correct, you can “Submit” your ad for consideration. You’ll receive email confirmation once your ad goes live.

5. Analyse & Measure Your Ad Performance

To find out how successful your Reddit ad campaign has been, you will need to analyse and measure your ad performance

Measuring your ad performance ‘can optimise budget, improve messaging, [and] help build your brand’, and is essential to determine what has gone well and what needs to be improved for future campaigns.

The easiest way to measure and keep track of the success of your Reddit ad campaign is through the advertising dashboard. That said, Google Analytics is also a highly useful tool to use in conjunction with this.

You will want to make sure that you are engaging with any users that leave comments on your ad as this will encourage other users to leave more.
